MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law a measure declaring September 8 of every year a special working holiday in the entire country to commemorate the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The holiday is contained in Republic Act 11370 signed by the president last August 8.

According to the Bible, Mary is the mother of Jesus, the central figure of Christianity.

About 80% of Filipinos are Christians.
